Betty

Juliette Berkhout is the author and illustrator of Betty.
Betty was initially written as a serial for the weekly Vrij Nederland.
Later it was published as a book by Prometheus.
For Juliette I scanned, cleaned and, in consultation with her, adjusted the illustrations where necessary.
Below is an overview of some of the illustrations.

Summary
Am I nice enough for my mother?
Are pine nuts still allowed by the culinary police?
Can I make money doing something I’m actually against?
How long do I have to pay child support to my lame ex?
Do I have to tweet?
Why does the person in front of me in the supermarket always have dirty food in his cart?
And who is that man with the communist jacket?
Every week thousands of readers follow in suspense the Vrij Nederland serial ‘Betty’, in which fortysomething Betty (journalist in art, culture and culinary issues, lat-relationship, no children) gropes her way through a forest of big-city modern dilemmas.
Betty likes things to stay old-fashioned the way they were.
She is primarily a spectator, a loner who views the world from her safe attic room and through the glasses of her imagination, making a pact with merciless reality when necessary.
But when things happen that make her everyday life suddenly not so ordinary, she will have to take action.
‘You need to land with both feet on the ground for once,’ says her lover David.
But maybe Betty doesn’t want that at all
